RAISES THE STANDARD

Keep Los Angeles Beautiful National Kickoff Event

The 2007 results in Los Angeles during the Great American Cleanup between March 1 and May 31 were outstanding: 26,546 registered volunteers; 101,320 volunteer hours; 345 tons of litter with 41,155 trash bags collected; 5 tons or 10,000 pounds of recyclables diverted from landfills; 712 graffiti sites were painted over or removed; 136 miles of streets, train tracks, trails, rivers and shorelines were cleaned; and 1,058 trees were planted along with 1,500 flowers and plant bulbs.

Nationwide, during the Great American Cleanup, 2.8 million volunteered 7.7 million hours and took personal responsibility and volunteer action to new heights. These volunteers collected 200 million pounds of litter and debris, recycled 23 million pounds of newspaper; and planted 121,000 trees with 4.5 million flowers and bulbs.

MORE INCREDIBLE FACTS
Last year, the Office of Community Beautification removed a record 30.5 million square feet of graffiti at more than 612,000 locations, handling more than 80,000 requests for service from the public. The city removed 15% more graffiti from 20% more locations in 2007.

In 2006, more than 25.9 million square feet of graffiti was removed from 489,656 locations, handling 53,367 requests for service.

BACKGROUND:
The city monitors 5,703 miles and 2,493 corridors for graffiti and litter – the distance between Los Angeles and Tokyo, Japan.
