Commissioner Capri W. Maddox currently serves as the President of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, the City’s only full-time, non-elected policy-making body. The five-member Board of Public Works collectively functions as the General Manager for the Department, which is the third largest municipal agency responsible for delivering basic services, such as maintaining the city infrastructure, such as bridges, roadways, sidewalks, sewers street lights and waste water treatment plants. In addition to these functions, the Board manages the construction, renovation and operation of public facilities. With approximately 5,500 employees and an annual budget of more than $1.8 billion, the Department of Public Works is the third largest municipal agency.
Prior to joining the Board, Commissioner Maddox served as Deputy City Attorney in the General Counsel Group for the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, which supports approximately 100 Neighborhood Council groups in the City. In addition, she also served as a Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney for the Office of the City Attorney in the Central Trials, Neighborhood Prosecutor Program and Complex Litigation sections. Before law school, Commissioner Maddox worked as a Community Development and Housing Analyst with the City of Glendale, and a Student Professional Worker and Earthquake Recovery Project Manager with the Los Angeles Housing Department.
During Commissioner Maddox’s 20 years of public service to enhance the quality of life for residents in the Los Angeles County area, she has been recognized for her leadership and service to others. Her professional accomplishments include the following: Bet Tzedek Legal Services Pro Bono Honor, Los Angeles Business Journal – Woman Making a Difference Nominee (Washington Corridor Revitalization Efforts), National Forum of Black Public Administrators - Young Public Administrator of the Year Award, Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives Award, Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney – Trial Advocacy Recognition, Getty House – Youth Civic Engagement Honor, Association of Black City Attorneys Past President Recognition, and the LAPD Badge Award (from West Bureau Police Officers for ten-years of public safety service).
She has a Master of Science in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University of Los Angeles. Commissioner Maddox received her Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California. In addition, she has completed the USC Lusk Center Minorities in Real Estate Development Program.
Commissioner Maddox is a member of First AME Church, where she serves in both political and social ministries. In her spare time, she serves as a youth mentor with numerous community organizations and enjoys working on public interest projects. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband and six-year old son.
